Brief Historical Background

Republic Act No. 4126 transformed the once-upon-a-time farm school into the University of Eastern Philippines, vesting it a full-fledged university status in 1964.  From its humble beginnings as the Catarman Agricultural School (CAS) in 1918, it has gone through a metamorphosis from Catarman Agricultural High School (CAHS), to Catarman National Agricultural High School (CNAHS), Samar Institute of Technology (SIT) and presently to its university status, braving 86 years of challenges as a prime comprehensive state institution of higher learning in the Eastern Visayas Region, Philippines.

Current Thrusts

The past decades under the stewardship of President Pedro D. Destura saw institutional changes designed to keep abreast with the times while serving the purpose for which the University was established.  The University's thrusts transcended the agricultural nature of its existence especially in the area of instruction where non-agricultural courses such as the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Laws, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing were included in its range of academic offerings.

To address the educational demands of a continuously increasing student population, new and contemporary courses were offered.  The then College of Arts and Sciences was split into the Colleges of Arts & Comunication and Science which paved the way for the offering of degree programs in mass media, sciences and information technology.  Regular accreditation by the AACCUP strengthened the University's curricular offerings resulting in efffective curriculum revision and provision of facilities to propel instruction to excellence.  As such, it is able to turn out graduates whose performance in board examinations is at par with those of the leading universities nationwide.
